What'll it take to get me there? What'll it take to get you there? What does a game have to do in order to take you there? Discuss. I'm attached to my past, but I'm not blinded by it.) Homestuck has supplanted The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy as my all-time favorite example of narrative media. I had no trouble putting Persona 4 in my personal top-ten list even though it's only been about a year since I first experienced it. 3 was my favorite Mario game until Galaxy handily toppled it in 2007. Why is that? (I reject the notion that this is all nostalgia, by the way. It should have left DKC2 in the dust instead, it's nipping at its heels. I'm looking at Tropical Freeze, another game that did everything right, made by Nintendo's new best western team and running on far superior hardware.
I don't have an answer, by the way I'm asking you guys. What did DKC2 do so right? Seriously, what is it? How did it capture and distill those childlike emotions, and how can future Donkey Kong games live up to the standard it set?
Super Mario Galaxy got damn close.) I think we all felt a certain way the first time we Hot Head Hopped, Bramble Scrambled, Rattle Battled, and explored Web Woods and Arctic Abyss. (Ocarina of Time and Banjo-Tooie got close. Maybe it's just that we're not kids anymore, and it's getting harder and harder to tap into that state of wide-eyed wonderment, and maybe it's that I've been depressed for years and can't often manage to feel much of anything, but the games that have taken me to that warm safe place where as a child I'd hide and wait for the thunder and the rain to quietly pass me by seem fewer and farther between. I've called Tropical Freeze my favorite before, and while it's definitely one of the best games I've played in decades, deserving of far more love than even DK Vine gives it, listening to this music again reminded me why DKC2 will always be nearest and dearest to my heart. I realize how silly this must sound to most people, but I owe some of my most emotional childhood experiences to this cartoon monkey video game. They weren't just fun they could be beautiful.
Games weren't just toys they could be art. The first time I played the game, at my cousin's house in 1998, I had an epiphany.
So I'm sitting here listening to some tunes from the Donkey Kong Country 2 soundtrack (specifically: Hot Head Bop, Forest Interlude, and In a Snowbound Land), and I find myself getting a little teary-eyed.
